Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
I suppose the other issue for all the youngsters now is they get paid she’d loads the moment they show any promise, have agents constantly whispering in their ear about bigger moves (for the benefit of the agent, never the player) and are wrapped in cotton wool, surrounded by yes men and not prepared for any form of failure

I’m sure it was either Zlatan or ronaldo who said in an interview not so long ago that just because you are the beat doesn’t mean you don’t need to try when you go out on the pitch - part of being the best is always putting the effort in, whether in training or competition. It’s when you don’t try you stop being the best (even if they make it look easy).

Too many youngsters lack that level of drive to succeed. Especially when you’re ravel or Reece oxford or someone who earned an absolute fortune as a kid on the basis that they should be good at some point.

Re: Diego Poyet and other fizzled our careers
I think some kids just peak when they are about 18-20 and simply don't get any better. Others such as Frank Lampard keep getting better. You can use analogies from other sports, Joe Root scored loads of runs in County cricket and went into the test team and continued to score buckets loads there whereas others like Ramprakash and Hick failed to make the extra step. As someone else said, once he knew he could not make it at the top level, motivation wained and other options come into play.

It was Bilic who sent him off.

The facilities are poor. The youth policies weren't coherent with Allardyce in control certainly. We packed him off on loan rather than working with the player. All a recipe for failure really.

Re: WHO?
Some players have ability in abundance that would shine through wherever they go. Others have talent that needs nurturing in the right way, in a system that suits with a manager and coaching staff that ‘gets’ them.

Listened to a podcast ages ago where they were talking about that hoddle academy in Spain that picked up released players and there was a chap who used to work for a random club like Bristol Rovers (I think because they were asking about Scott Sinclair was prob why he was on it) talking about the small window you have where a player can ‘click’ - where, if the chemistry is right for him in terms of the club he’s at, the players around him, the coaching staff etc, everything might fall into place with a lot of hard work but if you move any of those elements it may not work out at all (and was nicely trying to say hoddle was totally wasting his time!)

He used a load of examples - i remember him asking if others thought Nolan would have been as successful if Big Sam hadn’t been Bolton manager and hadn’t played to his strengths from a young age.

Also mentioned how some players love being a big fish In a small pond whilst others only play well with good players around them and the personality and psychological side of things are like a time bomb where, if a player gets disheartened or loses interest or gets an injury that messes with their head at the wrong time, their career can be over before it’s really begun.

How longs a piece of string, could be one of many reasons. Already having made a few quid, and the realisation that you are not good enough for the top level are 2 to be getting on with.

Re: WHO?
But to go so off the boil is odd. There isn’t a league 1 or 2 club that could sign him up?

He wasn’t just a big name in the youth team, he was Charlton’s player of the year and from that to unemployed at 24 with a bumper 4 year contract from the hammers inbetween.

Re: WHO?
When Bilic said that Poyet would be better off on loan because he was unlikely to command a first team place, he did not knuckle down to improve but, in his own words, decided he wanted to go anywhere else (no matter where) because he is impatient. He couldn't live with a reputation of not living up to expectations.

Re: WHO?
He did fine at Charlton as was said, it is the kind of signing we want the club to make, young English (grew up here at least) players with something to prove.

He did not have the best physical characteristics to play that position in the Premier League but I have no idea why he has not made it at much lower levels.

Maybe realising you are not be able to play at your dad's level took the interest and joy out of the game for him. Another - no idea - from me.

Re: WHO?
I did some very basic maths and came up with there is a one in ten thousand chance of being a prem footballer, that was just U.K. kids ,didn’t include overseas players so it’s actually a bit worse odds than that.

Darby_ 8:54 Tue Apr 7
Re: WHO?
No idea. Could be injury. Could be mental health issues after being dropped. Could be him not really giving a fuck after he realised he wasn’t going to make it.
